Xile now stocks the globally renowned Pantherella was founded in 1937 by German Louis Goldschmidt, who started his factory on Hallaton Street in Leicester, England where it is still based to this day. When the company first opened its doors in 1937 it began tto trade as Midlands Hosiery Mills, an established women's hosiery factory. In 1945 the name was changed and a legend was born: Pantherella Fine English Socks began trading.
Goldschmidt had previously been a manufacturer of socks in his native Germany, he was tired of producing bulky, bland, uncomfortable socks for men, his vision was that fine gauge english socks were the future. He believed that lightweight, seamless, fancy socks would be in high demand as trends were changing towards more lighter weight clothing. As the demand for lightweight mens socks became considerable, Goldschmidt convinced local machine makers P.A. Bentley to produce a specialist double cylinder fine gauge sock machine to create his vision.
Once on the market, the demand for Pantherella socks was significant. By the time the competitors cottoned on to Goldschmidt’s innovative design plans he had already set the industry standard, leaving the competition in the shadows. Pantherella became renowned for creating the world’s finest socks, and are widely recognised across the world as such today. Unyielding quality standards as well as constant consideration of new yarn and seasonal fashion trends have ensured that Pantherella socks are as desirable today as they were nearly 80 years ago. Right from the very beginning, Pantherella established itself as a maker of fine English socks. As well as modern tech, the company uses a lot of traditional techniques and processes. Each pair of socks are hand-finished by a team of skilled sock makers to ensure they meet the highest quality standards.
Features such as the smooth fine-linked toe seams for extra comfort, and reinforced heels and toes add durability. Pantherella use the best quality materials in the world, and have done for generations. Their reputation is acknowledged both in the UK and abroad by many of the world's premium department stores and have been stocked by Harrods since the 1940's. As well as gaining followers from style icons and aristocrats to Royals and some dapper dressers along the way. Recently the socks have been worn in the Oscar winning film, ‘Still Alice’, as well as by Mark Ronson in the video for his number one hit, ‘Uptown Funk’.
