Finnish footwear brand Karhu has cemented itself as a sportswear staple, with the perfect blend of sportswear and streetwear, the brand is well respected amongst both marathon runners and sneakerheads. Established in 1916, Karhu has been generating great technical running gear for over 100 years. Originally labelled ‘Flying Finns’ and initially constructed in a small Helsinki workshop specialising in transforming locally sourced Birch into sporting accessories.
The Finnish footwear brand takes their name from the Finnish word for Bear. The brand has become a mainstay of both running and street fashion and has been worn by five boston marathon winners, Paavo Nurmi (famous finnish runner) and Mr. Kanye West has even been seen sporting a pair of Karhu. The brand has grown to see such success thanks to following the Finnish approach to design, focusing on quality, simplicity and purity of running.
This season Karhu announces the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ collection, inspired by Finland’s twilight hours: glimmering orange, starry white and grey, set against a landscape of calm blue lakes with tree lined horizons. The brand pays homage to its connection to the outdoors and its Finnish roots by focusing on the phenomenon of the summers north of the Arctic circle. Where the sun does not completely set from May until August, and under a clear sky Finland offers the unique experience to see the sun shine all through the night.
