FILA | AW'14 COLLECTION

19.09.14

Vintage inspired sportswear is huge this season. Fashion conscious consumers of all ages are reliving the glory days of the 1980’s and showcasing the very best in European sports fashion. Fresh colourways, bold designs and vintage inspired styling is key and we’re seeing a huge resurgence in classic brands such as Sergio Tachinni and Ellesse.

The brand making the biggest impression however is undoubtedly Fila. Although the label has been bubbling away for a number of years now, many commentators believe that 2014 will be the year that Fila returns to the big time. All the key ingredients are present for Fila to explode onto the market; as well as a healthy back catalogue of vintage designs the brand also boasts a design team who can combine retro styling with contemporary elements to create new styles. This ability to showcase the best heritage pieces from their history and develop new styles means that Fila is a brand to watch.

Originally founded in Italy in the 1920’s by the Fila brothers, the company initially specialised in knitwear. It was only in the 1970’s that the brand cemented its place in history and branched out into sports fashion. Soon the label was adopted by tennis stars of the day such as 5 time major winner, Bjorn Borg and later , who were impressed by the brand’s style and sophistication. By 1973 Fila had launched the White Line collection, a playful joke at the expense of traditional tennis whites. This collection had a luxurious feel and used bold colours and rich materials to transform sportswear into fashion.

This innovative approach to sportswear saw the business succeed and by the 1980’s Fila offered ski-wear, mountaineering-wear and footwear amongst its many lines. These collections all maintained the style and cutting edge design ethos the brand is famous for and helped it become a global icon. Rightly considered one of the most luxurious sports brands it was no surprise that Fila permeated popular culture and was a key brand in subcultures as diverse as hip-hop and the casuals.

This season’s offering from Fila concentrates on vintage tracktops – the range contains a selection of styles from the archive. From baseball collars to funnel necks, these pieces are bang on trend and will make a great addition to any wardrobe. There’s also a sharp selection of polo shirts and even a retro roll neck top.
